Library News

September 2015

Dear Parents

We hope that everyone is settled back to the new school year and hopefully to a great year of books and reading for the boys. Our boys’ wonderful library experience is entirely dependent on the efforts of parents who volunteer their time. As we did last year, we need a rota of parent volunteers to commit up to an hour in the library, in the morning immediately after school drop off, usually every 4-6 weeks (depending on response).

This is an enjoyable time, issuing and returning books using an easy to follow computer system. If you have not volunteered before we will bring you up to speed very quickly and the boys love to see their parents involved.

The days on which the boys will visit the library this year are:
Monday                          Senior Infants (reading sessions this term, borrowing after Christmas)
Tuesday                         4th and 5th class
Wednesday                    1st and 3rd class
Thursday                       2nd class (both classes)
Friday                           6th class will visit in the afternoon with Mr Scullys (no parents required)

We hope that you will be able to make the time to keep the boys reading. If so please fill out the form below and return to the class teacher by this Friday 18th September so that we can open the library as soon as possible.

Our New Library

After several years of operating from separate senior and junior premises, St Marys BNS has recently opened our new library, with all the books now housed under one roof! Located in the prefab at the entrance to the school yard (formerly 5th class classroom), the library is home to almost 2,000 books, ranging from popular favourites such as Captain Underpants and Horrid Henry to comprehensive reference books, covering a wide range of topics. So far the new library with its increased area and comfy couches seems to be a big hit with the boys.

The boys from 1st to 6th class are now well settled into their weekly library sessions, and we look forward to welcoming the Senior Infants to start borrowing books after Christmas. Junior Infants will also be introduced to the library through regular reading sessions with their teachers this term and volunteer parents after the Christmas holidays.

New books

Thanks to the generosity of St Marys BNS Parents Association we recently purchased several new books for the library. These books are now on the library shelves and included in the selection are the ever popular Guinness Book of Records 2015 and Ripley’s Believe it or Not 2015. Look out for more new books arriving soon, included will be football annuals and the recently released new Wimpy Kid, The Long Haul.  We are always keen to hear what the boys want to read, so send us suggestions or requests and we will do our best to get the books you would like.

Once again we would like to thank all those who volunteer to help out with library. The library runs from 8.50am for approximately one hour from Monday to Thursday and the boys really enjoy seeing that their parents are involved. We are pleased to advise that we have taken the comfort of the volunteers into consideration in our new premises and we now have a desk and chair from which operations can be run! If you have some free time and would like to help out please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Gillian O'Brien, who not only had the vision for the library almost 5 years ago, but with full school support, the drive to follow through.

We look forward to seeing you in our library soon!
