🎉 June Adventures: Cricket, Creativity, and Characters! 🎨🏏
June has been an action-packed month for our young learners! With the sun shining bright and imaginations soaring, the children embarked on exciting new experiences in both sports and the arts. Here’s a glimpse into what we’ve been up to:
🏏 Learning to Play Cricket
Our budding athletes hit the field this month to learn the fundamentals of cricket.
Under the guidance of our enthusiastic coaches, the children:
- Learned the basic rules of the game
- Practiced batting, bowling, and fielding techniques
- Played friendly matches to build teamwork and sportsmanship
It was heartwarming to see how quickly they picked up the skills and supported one another on and off the pitch. By the end of the month, many were confidently swinging the bat and cheering for their teammates!
🖌️ Portraits of Favorite Characters
The month wouldn’t be complete without a personal touch. Each child selected a character they admire — from beloved storybook figures to superheroes and animated friends. They then created their own portraits of these characters, using materials and we made them into 3D art!
The portraits were full of personality and flair, reflecting each child’s unique perspective. We proudly displayed their work in our classroom.
🌟 What We Learned
Through cricket and creative art activities, the children:
- Built teamwork and coordination
- Developed fine motor and artistic skills
- Expressed individuality through art
- Gained confidence in trying new activities
🌼 May in Our Classroom: A Month Full of Learning and Creativity! 🌼
May was a busy and exciting month in our classroom! The children were engaged in a wide variety of learning activities across different subjects, and we’re so proud of their enthusiasm and creativity.
⚖️ Maths Fun with Weight, Time, and Data
In Maths, we explored the topic of weight — estimating, comparing, and measuring different objects using grams and kilograms. The children loved getting hands-on with scales! We also took a closer look at time and data. We practiced reading timetables and created our own simple surveys, turning the results into colorful bar charts and pictograms.
📖 A New Novel Adventure Begins
We began reading our new novel ' The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark', and the class has been captivated by the story so far. The children are doing a fantastic job discussing characters, making predictions, and diving into the plot. It’s lovely to see their reading confidence and comprehension skills continue to grow.
🎙️ A Visit from Storyteller Niall de Búrca
We were lucky to welcome the incredible Niall de Búrca to our school this month! His storytelling session was a magical experience — full of laughter, imagination, and wonder. The children were completely absorbed, and many were inspired to try telling stories of their own afterward.
🎨 Creative Arts: Sailboats & Town Design
In Art, creativity was in full sail! We made beautiful sailboats, each one unique and colorful. As part of our SESE work, we also designed our own towns — thinking about buildings, roads, parks, and where people might live and work. The results were imaginative and thoughtful. Future town planners in the making!
🍃 First Class Explorers: A Journey Through Nature! 🍃
We embraced the lovely warm weather before Easter as first class adventurers set off on a local geography trail to discover the amazing world of trees, leaves, and flowers right on our doorstep! With clipboards in hand and eyes wide with curiosity, the children wandered through our playground and green spaces, turning into real-life nature detectives.
Along the way, they learned how to tell the difference between different types of trees by studying the shape and texture of their leaves. They spotted wildflowers like daisies, dandelions, and bluebells, and even found some tiny hidden treasures like insects living in our playground in St Marys BNS Booterstown!
Through touching, observing, and sketching their finds, the children developed a deeper understanding of how plants grow and why trees are so important for our environment. They asked brilliant questions, shared their discoveries with friends, and marvelled at the rich variety of life thriving all around them.
By the end of the trail, First Class had not only filled their nature journals but also their hearts with a new appreciation for the beauty and wonder of the natural world. 🌳🌼
Flossie and the Beach Cleaners: Young Eco-Heroes in Action!
We kicked off our Easter holidays with the boys in 1st class rolling up their sleeves and joining Flossie and the Beach Cleaners for a fun-filled, hands-on beach clean-up in a local beach in Dublin! Armed with gloves, buckets, and lots of energy, the young volunteers helped remove everything from plastic bottles to fishing nets, learning firsthand about the different types of waste that sadly end up on our beautiful shores.
Along the way, Flossie and her team shared fascinating insights into the marine environment, the importance of recycling, and the impact litter has on sea life. From curious finds to inspiring conversations, the day was a wonderful reminder that caring for our planet starts with small, determined steps — and that no one is too young to make a difference.
A huge thank you to Flossie and her team for giving up their time to complete this fun filled activity with 1st class!!
