Science week in Junior Infants was packed with curiosity, colour, creativity and lots of excited little scientists!

Learning About Our Bodies & Becoming Doctors

We began the week by exploring our bodies, how they work and how we keep them healthy. The children transformed into doctors, nurses, paramedics and patients, using role-play to learn all about:

  • Ambulances and emergencies
  • How to help someone who is hurt
  • The important jobs doctors and paramedics do every day

This hands-on imaginative learning supported, development of vocabulary, using descriptive language, practise question-asking and answering, sequencing, learning about our bodies, counting, sorting materials, empathy, turn-taking and problem-solving.

A Very Special Visit from a Real-Life Scientist!

We were extremely lucky  to welcome a real-life scientist into our classroom. The children were full of awe as our visitor helped us make:

  • Lava lamps that bubbled and danced
  • Amazing (and very safe!!!) explosions that popped, fizzed and filled the classroom with wonder.

The children asked questions, made predictions and observed real chemical reactions - super learning for Numeracy and Materials, Change and Energy!

Our GIANT Classroom Explosion!

The highlight for many of the boys was our giant colourful classroom explosion. We mixed special ingredients, stepped back and watched as the reaction erupted into many different colours!!!

Building Our Own Inventions

Creativity was everywhere this week. We used all of our fantastic STEAM materials to design and build:

  • Robots
  • Machines
  • Vehicles
  • Imaginary inventions of every shape and size

This supported STEAM learning aims of problem-solving, designing, constructing and evaluating ideas.

Our "Safety Suit for Humpty Dumpty" Experiment

We carried out a fantastic investigation to discover what material would make the best safety suit for Humpty Dumpty.

We filled zip-lock bags with different materials and dropped them from a height to test which would protect the egg best:

  • Paper
  • Tissue
  • Cotton Wool - OUR WINNER!!!

The cotton wool kept Humpty Dumpty safe and crack-free. The children loved predicting, testing, comparing and recording results - lots of learning while Working Scientifically.

Science Week was a fantastic celebration of curiosity, exploration and fun.

Well done to all our brilliant Junior Infant Scientists!!!
