January was an exciting month in 5th Class as we explored the fascinating world beneath the waves with the Foras na Mara Marine Institute. We were delighted to welcome Mona, who led two fantastic workshops titled “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly ”, teaching us about marine life, ocean zones and how humans impact our oceans.

In the first workshop, we learned about ocean depth, the different zones of the sea, the three major poles of ocean exploration, and some incredible creatures living in our waters. A highlight was making slime to represent the hagfish’s defence mechanism.

Two weeks later, Mona returned and the class proudly presented their marine life projects, showcasing wonderful creativity and knowledge through models, posters and presentations.

We also made Oobleck, a fluid that acts like both a solid and a liquid depending on pressure. This helped us understand how sea creatures adapt to deep-ocean pressure. Building on this, the class explored deep-sea exploration through a documentary on Ocean Gate and the Titan submersible.

A huge thank you to Mona and the Foras na Mara Marine Institute for making learning about our oceans so exciting! 🌊🐠
